Funkadelic Freestyles 043 + 044 Podcast

Posted in Uncategorized on August 29, 2009 by RMJ

This past Tuesday (8.25.09), J-$crilla released his debut album Culture of Honor to the masses. (It’s available for $7.99 with all the instrumentals on Amazon). We asked $crilla and his Inner Loop family to join us in-studio to celebrate the release, and they gladly obliged. Here’s the podcast in full – split into two fantastic hours. Part one features a special phone call from activist and radio host Sabir Bey, who addressed the media, politics, and KRS-One & Buckshot’s new album. Part two includes an in-depth interview with J-$crilla and a side-splitting cypher from Sketch, K-Beta, & Lyriciss. Also, DJ MAF mixes the first hour, and DJ Jerome Baker III mixes the second. [NOTE: There is a small amount of skipping throughout this podcast, but it is tolerable and it won’t ruin your eardrums]

PODCAST: FF 043 – Pt. 1 (feat. Sabir Bey)
PODCAST: FF 043 – Pt. 2 (feat. J-$crilla, Sketch, Lyriciss, & K-BETA)

You’ve never seen a podcast go up this fast! That’s because last night’s show was simply incredible. 2006 was the last time DC legend and emcee Asheru had visited the WRGW studios, a year before J.ben.ok joined the station. Three years later, our esteemed cohost and fellow RMJuicer, Unkle Scooty runs into Asheru and convinces him to stop by the studio (thank goodness). On Saturday, J.ben.ok ran into Kingpen Slim backstage at LOVE and made sure he’d be joining us early on Thursday night. Then Kokayi calls J.ben.ok up on Tuesday, finds out Ash is hanging with us, and agrees to sit in on Thursday. Now that’s what you call a successful three-hour show.

Part one features our interview with Kingpen Slim, covering everything from his beginnings to his now-promising future. Part two features a special call-in from FWMJ (we tried to get donations for Rappers I Know, y’all failed) and the start of our conversation with Asheru, Kokayi, and special guest Blackberry Jones. Part three features the most poignant discussion we’ve had in months, the premiere of the Blackberry Jones x Michael Jackson remix project King of Chop, and a spectacular cypher with our three guests. Oh, and did I mention a special call-in from the newest member of the Low Budget Crew, Hassaan Mackey?

The Urban Hang Suite

RMJ was personally invited to a brand new social event by ConArtists Guild and LNdour Sunday 9.06.09 as they translate Soho to DC @Studio10. Like such private NYC happenings, all individuals attending this event are of an exclusive order, where style equals substance. The specs below:

We know all too well that looks can be deceiving…The UrbanHangSuite will prove this further, by pitting grit versus glamour, with Studio 10 creating the perfect contrast of environments. Not a lounge or club, but a private loft studio which boasts 5000 sq ft, 30 ft ceilings, 2 levels, and multiple bars. Set in a nondescript location, the raw, rigid exterior is properly balanced by the awe of its plush loft space.

Break from the routine, and see what the beauty of new discovery offers.

PS: If you need to know the dress code, you may not want to attend.

RIP DJ AM

RIP DJ AM

Our deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of Mr. Adam Goldstein. Its always sad when someone from the culture leaves, especially at such a young age of 36.

His last message on twitter was a verse from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, kind of eerie when you think about it…

…You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law and I know my way around

Hes done so much for the dj community as well as sneaker culture. He and his legendary Air Mack$ Crew kicked the “sneaker head” frenzy off way back when.

Hope he is somewhere better, enjoying paradise. Rest in Peace.

Y.O.L.O ( you only live once) Make the most of it y’all.

WHEN THE $ GOES…

Wow, I was immediately taken back by this video. Im loving the black + white theme used, as well as it looking more like a mini-movie rather than an actual video. The lyrics do just that, by painting the perfect image, and director Parris executed it perfectly.

The opening scene you know is pure awesomeness, you know.

ENJOY.

XO IS MONUMENTAL.

Posted in Art, Music on August 19, 2009 by RMJ

Fresh off of his interview on WKYS with PStew and the One Nation Hip Hop Show, this past Saturday, Uptowns Finest XO drops his 4th mixtape effort. In conjunction with AB the Producer, who has deff come a long way sonically, and we deff respect his conglomerate.

This mixtape isnt the usual dark, raw, gutter sound we’ve come to expect from XO, but offers a new fresh & smoother soundm he’s created alongside AB. In my humble opinion, it definitely works.

We were the first to introduce XO to the blogosphere during this interview way back when and are extremely proud to see him making big strides in his career. With multiple mentions in the city paper and washington post alike, this young talented MC is sure to be making alot of noise in the upcoming months.
